Philip Holland's ALS to his brother, H. R. Holland, is dated 21 March 1849 and comments favorably on Texas livestock, land, and climate. Holland, a recent immigrant from Virginia to Austin, also remarks on the local population's health, his own improved constitution, concern for his mother's illness, and bouts with homesickness. C. O. Perkins' ALS to John C. Holland is dated 7 Nov 1849. Writing to Philip Holland's brother after Hollands's death from malaria, Perkins describes transportation hurdles and other complications involved in shipping Holland's body from Austin to his family in Wilmington, Virginia.
